When it comes to family vehicles, I’m always looking for one thing:
Does this actually make life easier as a parent?
I recently had the chance to experience a few Volvo models, including the Volvo XC60 PHEV Ultra, Volvo XC90 PHEV Ultra, and the fully electric Volvo EX30 Ultra Twin Motor—and let’s just say… I definitely had a favourite.

Volvo XC90 PHEV Ultra (My Top Pick for Families)
If you’re a family, this is the one.
The XC90 is Volvo’s larger SUV, and you feel that immediately—in the best way. It’s a three-row vehicle with up to seven seats, which already puts it ahead for parents juggling kids, car seats, or extra passengers.

What I loved most:
- The space — room for kids, bags, snacks, all the things
- A flexible layout (hello third row when you need it, extra trunk when you don’t)
- A super premium interior (Nappa leather, crystal gear selector… it feels elevated)
- Built-in family-friendly features like rear sunshades and advanced safety tech
It’s also a plug-in hybrid, which I personally love. You can drive short distances on electric, but still have gas for longer trips—no range anxiety, which is huge as a mom constantly on the go.
My honest take:
This is the kind of car that actually fits real life with kids. School runs, road trips, Costco hauls—it handles it all without feeling cramped or chaotic.

Volvo XC60 PHEV Ultra (The “In-Between” Option)
The XC60 is like the middle child—smaller than the XC90, but still a solid SUV.
It has:
- Two rows (so no third row)
- The same plug-in hybrid benefits
- Volvo’s signature clean, minimal interior design
- Strong safety features (which Volvo is known for)
For a smaller family or someone who doesn’t need that extra row, it’s a great option.
My honest take:
It’s nice—but once you experience the XC90, it’s hard not to want that extra space. As a mom, I always think ahead: more kids, more gear, more chaos 😂
Volvo EX30 Ultra Twin Motor (Compact & Fully Electric)
The EX30 is:
- Fully electric
- Much more compact
- Very minimalist and tech-forward
It’s quick, fun to drive, and definitely feels like it’s built for a more urban lifestyle.

You’ll find:
- A large central screen with most controls
- Premium sound and tech features
- Advanced safety systems
My honest take:
This felt more like a city or commuter vehicle than a family car. It’s stylish and fun, but for my day-to-day as a mom, I need more space and flexibility.
I will say—my experience with it might have been different if I had a home charging setup. I don’t currently have that, so relying on public charging stations felt like a bit of a hassle during an already busy schedule. It’s doable, but it adds an extra layer of planning that doesn’t always fit into real-life mom days.
Final Thoughts: Which Volvo Would I Choose?
If I had to pick one?
👉 Volvo XC90 PHEV Ultra — no question
It just makes the most sense for family life:
- Space for everything (and everyone)
- Hybrid flexibility (best of both worlds)
- Comfort that actually makes long days easier
The others have their place—but when you’re in the thick of parenting, space and practicality win every time.
The One Thing I Did Love Across All of Them
Volvo really leans into hybrid and electric driving, and I genuinely appreciate that.
As a mom:
- I like reducing gas usage where I can
- I like having the option to go electric for shorter trips
- But I also like not being fully dependent on charging
That balance is something Volvo does really well.
